Five Named All-Conference
WELLESLEY, MASS.--(5/1/12)--The Coast Guard Academy men's tennis team had five players named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-conference team and the Bears won the sportsmanship award for the sixth straight season.
The Bears, who finished second in the NEWMAC during the regular season with a 4-1 record, were 11-7 overall and lost to Clark 5-4 in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
Sophomore Josh Fischer (#2 singles), senior Nick Martin (#3 singles) and junior Blake Maurer (#4 singles) along with the #2 doubles team of Maurer and Fischer earned first team All-conference honors while the Bears #1 doubles team of Martin and senior Greg Mitchell earned second team All-conference honors.
Fischer was unbeaten, 5-0, in conference play this season, the only Coast Guard player to do so. Martin and Maurer were each 3-1 at #3 and #4 singles respectively in conference action both losing to 14-time defending champion MIT.
The doubles team of Maurer and Fischer and Martin and Mitchell were both 4-1 in NEWMAC play with the only losses coming to MIT.
Maurer earns All-conference honors for the third straight season as he was a second team All-conference selection at #5 singles a year ago and he was second-team selection at #4 singles in 2010.
Martin and Mitchell earn All-NEWMAC honors for the second time in their careers as Martin was first team selection at #2 singles as a sophomore while Mitchell was a second team selection at #1 singles also during the 2010 season.
