Tennis Routs Emerson, Improves NEWMAC Standing

NEW LONDON, Conn.-Sophomores Weston Fortna and Townsend Hirst were each 6-0, 6-0 winners and Coast Guard won both contested doubles matches by identical 8-0 scores on their way to a convincing 9-0 victory over Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference tennis action on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory, Coast Guard improves to 4-9 (2-3 NEWMAC) on the year while the loss drops Emerson to 0-7 (0-4 NEWMAC).

While Fortna and Hirst picked up victories at #2 and #4 singles, the Bears also got straight set victories from sophomore Robert Renfrow (#1: 6-3, 6-2), junior Jon Lightner (#3: 6-0, 6-1), and junior David Leemon (#5: 6-0, 6-1).

The pairings of Fortna and sophomore Mark Guentert and junior Alex Mead and Renfrow gave the Bears 8-0 victories at both #1 and #2 doubles on the afternoon.

Emerson defaulted at #6 singles and #3 doubles as they were unable to field competitors for those events.
