Fortna and Guentert Named to All-Conference Team

BOSTON, Mass. – Coast Guard sophomores Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna were both named to the 2014 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's tennis all-conference doubles team. The NEWMAC announced the men's tennis all-conference team and award winners on Tuesday afternoon following the conclusion of the conference championship over the weekend.

MIT, which collected its 16th straight conference title on Sunday, led the way with a league high six All-Conference selections, including NEWMAC Athlete of the Year, Edwin Zhang. Springfield College newcomer, Tanner DeVarennes, was tabbed as Rookie of the Year while Babson head coach Jim Berrigan received Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Beavers to their second-straight appearance in the NEWMAC title match.

Doubles pairings, Zhang and Oh as well as Perez and Vu, collected All-Conference recognition. Wang and his partner Curtis Wu were also named, as was the Coast Guard duo of Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna. Coast Guard Academy earned the league's Sportsmanship Award for the eighth year in a row.

Fortna and Guentert finished the year with an overall double's record of 14-8 (5-1 NEWMAC). Fortna went 11-9 (4-2 NEWMAC) in singles competition while Guentert was 12-8 (3-2 NEWMAC).

Zhang was joined on the All-Conference singles team by teammates Jeffrey Bu, Eugene Oh and Kevin Wang. Babson had three singles players selected in sophomores Roberto Perez, Isaac Thylen and Victor Vu. Dan Stein of Clark University nabbed the final All-Conference singles slot.
