NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy men's tennis team which posted a record of 4-1 during the Fall season cracked the ITA Division III Northeast Top 20 rankings as the Bears checked in at #19 heading to the Spring season.
Coast Guard posted wins over Vassar, Salve Regina, Nichols and Division II Assumption while suffering their only loss of the Fall to Trinity, ranked 5th in the Northeast.
"We're really excited for the guys. Collectively, they came into the Fall season in great shape and it was obvious that they put in a lot of hard-work off the court this summer," said Mike Turdo, Coast Guard Academy Director of Tennis. "The exceptional leadership demonstrated by the upper class cadets is what we expect from our future officers. The team captains have created a winning attitude that the underclass players have embraced. We're very excited for the future of Coast Guard tennis."
Senior Weston Fortna lead the Bears with a 7-1 record in singles play during the Fall season while sophomore John Hu was 6-1 and sophomore Michael Melampy posted a 5-1 record singles.
In doubles action, Melampy and freshman Jack Phillips had a 8-1 record , 4-1 in dual meets, while the Bears top doubles team of Fortna and senior Mark Guentert were 8-3, 4-1 in dual meets.
Coast Guard will open the Spring portion of the season on March 24th when the Bears host archrival Merchant Marine. The Spring schedule includes several regionally ranked teams: #6 Tufts, #11 Brandeis, #14 NYU, #16 MIT and #17 Babson.
