NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Kyle Fager's win at #5 singles clinched the match as Coast Guard beat Vassar 5-4 in the spring season opener to give head coach Jordon Smith a win in his collegiate head coaching debut.
Smith was named head coach of the team after the Fall season. The Bears improve to 2-0 on the season while Vassar drops to 5-4 overall.
In a match that was moved indoors due to weather, Coast Guard won two of three doubles matches with Fager and classmate Chris Lansing winning 8-3 at #2 doubles while senior Mike Melampy and junior Jack Phillips posted an 8-4 win at #3 doubles.
Junior Tom Hackett won 6-2, 6-4 at #1 singles, Melampy was a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 winner at #3 singles and Fager posted a 6-2, 7-6 win at #5 singles for the clincher.
Vassar had won five of the last six meetings between the two teams including an 8-1 win last season.
The Bears are back in action at home against archrival Merchant Marine on March 27th at 4:00.
