Bears Place Second at Silfen Invite

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/21/12)--Coast Guard won four events and took second in four others as the Bears placed second at the Silfen Invitational at Connecticut College.

UMass Dartmouth won with 175 points while Coast Guard finished the 12 team field with 156 points.

Senior Trevor Siperek won the 5,000 meters (14:53.81) to qualify for the All-New England Championships, freshman Ben Hannon won the 400 meters (49.86) with a career-best time, senior Myles McCarthy won the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:13).

Sophomore Ben Wolhaupter won the pole vault (14-9) while junior teammates Ian Sankey (12-9) and Zach Speck (10-9.5) were second and third and freshman Christian Von Stralendorff (10-9.5) was fourth in the event.

Junior Will Baker was second in the discus with a throw of 142 feet, 11 inches while sophomore Bryan Ayotte took second in the shot put (44-4.25).

Also for the Bears, senior Joe Hill was third in the 5000 meters (15:39.02), sophomore Jordan Lee was third in the 800 meters (1:57.60), Hannon was third in the 200 meters (23.03), freshman Joel MacArthur was third in the javelin (170-09), sophomore Thomas Bondurant was third in the hammer (146-2) qualifying for the Division III New England Championships.

The Bears 4x800 relay team of freshman Ryan Hub, freshman Zack Kearney, senior Trevor Auth and Lee placed second with a time of 8:10.16.
