Bears Win Season-Opening Invitational

NEW LONDON, Conn. –  Senior Jordan Lee won the 600 meters (1:24.06) and the mile (4:34.79) as the Bears won the Coast Guard Winter Invitational to open the season.

Coast Guard finished 167 points while Westfield State (125) was second, Eastern Connecticut (87) was third, Rhode Island College (73) and Trinity (73) tied for fourth.

Senior All-American Adam Scalesse, who won the 55 hurdles with a time of 7.68 set the facility record with a time of 7.60 in the preliminaries.

The Bears took the top three spots in the pole vault as senior Ben Wolhaupter won with a vault of 14-7.25, sophomore Matt Navetta was second (13-7.25) and freshman Kaci Rex was third (13-1.5).

Junior Ben Hannon placed second in the 200 meters (23.75) and the 400 meters (53.01) while senior Thomas Bondurant was second in the weight throw (53-8.25) and senior Gary Ezzo placed second in the mile (4:39.99).

Sophomore Ben Chapman (2:02.53) and freshman Andrew Sheffey (2:02.81) took first and second in the 800 meters respectively. Freshman Zachary Valazquez took second in the 3,000 meters.

Senior Brad Pienta placed third in the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:42.90 and the 3,000 meters (9:22.06) while sophomore  Frederick Higgins was third (1:27:57) in the 600 meters.


The Bears won a pair of relays as the 4x400 of junior James Dawkins, Higgins, senior Richard Brady and Scalesse won with a time of 3:29.38 and the 4x800 of junior James Martin, junior Ryan Hub, sophomore Park Suski and sophomore Ben Chapman won in 8:25.35.
