NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard senior Adam Scalesse and sophomore Mark Guentert were named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports as announced by the conference today.
Scalesse was named NEWMAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week while Guentert was named Men's Tennis Singles Player of the Week. Scalesse wins track athlete of the week for the fourth time in the last three seasons while Guentert is being honored as tennis singles player of the week for the first time in his career.
Scalesse won a pair of events to pace the Coast Guard men's track and field team to a third place finish at the season-opening CGA Spring Invitational on Saturday. As a team Coast Guard won four individual events with Scalesse claiming victories in both the 110 hurdles (14.54 seconds) and 400 hurdles (54.96 seconds).
Guentert went 3-0 on the week, winning twice at #2 singles (Conn. College and Wheaton) and once at #1 singles (Johnson & Wales) to help Coast Guard pick up their second victory of the season, an 8-1 victory over Johnson & Wales. Guentert also partnered with classmate Weston Fortna to go 2-1 at #1 doubles on the week.
Scalesse and the rest of the track and field team will return to action on Saturday, April 5th when they compete at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by American International College. Guentert and the rest of the tennis team will return to action on Wednesday, April 2nd when they host Springfield College in a NEWMAC contest at 3:30 pm.
