AMHERST, Mass.-Three Coast Guard track and field athletes compete in the first day of the 2014 UMass Amherst Minuteman Multi-Event competition on Thursday afternoon. The event was a late addition to the Coast Guard schedule, coming to fruition only after the Holy Cross Multi-Event competition was canceled as a result of the weather.
After day 1, senior Abby Bishop is in 3rd place with 2493 points. She ran 15.96 in the 100 hurdles, cleared 4'8.25" in the high jump, threw 30'1" in the shot put and won the 200 meters with a time of 26.49. Tomorrow she will contest the long jump, javelin, and 800 meter run.
On the men's side, senior Clay Kosack is sitting in 3rd place with 2837 points after day 1 while freshman Kaci Rex is in 6th. Kosack ran 12.05 in the 100, jumped 18'5.25" in the long jump, threw 36'4.75" in shot, cleared 5'1.25" in high jump, and posted the top 400 time for the day at 52.47. Rex ran 12.60, long jumped 17'9.75, threw 28'9.75" in shot, cleared 5'3.75" in high, and ran 56.27.
Kosack and Rex return to action tomorrow beginning with the 110 hurdles followed by discus, pole vault, javelin, and the 1500 meter run.
