Men's 4x400 to Compete at NCAA Championship

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy men's 4x400 relay has earned a spot and will compete at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.

The 4x400 relay of  juniors Jacob Pawlina (48.7) and Benjamin Taminger (48.9) and seniors Luke Rehfuss (49.1) and Raeford Penny (47.9) broke the school record with a time of 3:15.07, the sixth fastest time in Division III this season, which they posted at the Boston University Last Chance Qualifier on Feb. 25th.

The quartet earned All-New England honors with a third place finish at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship this year.

Three of the four (Pawlina, Rehfuss and Penny) were part of the Bears 4x400 relay which competed last year at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship. It will be the first NCAA appearance for Taminger.

The 4x400 will run on Friday at 5:35 p.m CT / 6:35 p.m. ET.

For each men's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each women's individual event contested, including the pentathlon, the top 17 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. For each relay event contested, the top 12 declared relay teams, one per institution, were accepted into the competition. The championships will be held March 9-10 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, with Birmingham Southern College and the Birmingham CrossPlex serving as hosts.
