2012 Men's Cross Country Preview
The Bears and new head coach Ethan Brown will be led by a strong core of sophomores and juniors after graduating a group of seniors which included three of the Bears top finishers at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship last season, two of whom were All-conference performers.
Brown, who has coached the women's team for the past three seasons will now coach both as he takes over for Steve Eldridge, who coached the men's team for the past 43 years.
Coast Guard placed third last season at the NEWMAC Championships and junior Gary Ezzo is the lone All-conference returning. He placed 11th last season with a time of 26:43 to earn All-NEWMAC honors for the first time. Ezzo missed the indoor and outdoor track seasons with an injury last season.
Junior Ryan O'Neill and sophomores James Martin and Joe O'Connell are ready to move into the top seven for the Bears this season. O'Connell was the second Coast Guard finisher at the ECAC Division III Championship last season with a time of 28:49 as the Bears placed 16th of 44 teams.
Other runners who will look to be in the mix for the top seven spots this season are juniors Jordan Lee, Matt Monahan and co-captain Brad Pienta along with sophomores Steven Horvath, Nicholas Foster and Erick Jackson as well as freshmen Park Suski and Ben Chapman.
