WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.-Senior Gary Ezzo paced the men's cross country team to a fifth place finish among 13 teams at the Purple Valley Invitational hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock High School.
The Bears had a strong showing among some of the top competition in the New England region, including MIT (New England #1, National #5), Williams (3rd/9th), Middlebury (6th/23rd), Amherst (NE #7). Ezzo was the top finisher for the Bears, placing ninth and covering the hilly 8K course in 26:34. Next in scoring position for Coast Guard was freshman Zach Velasquez posting an outstanding time of 27:15 in his collegiate 8K debut finishing in 20th place.
Junior Jonathan Lash was 29th overall and third to cross the finish for Coast Guard running 27:35. Senior Brad Pienta was the fourth finisher for the Bears (44th overall) covering the course in 27:46. The final runner in scoring position was junior Stephen Horvath in 49th place, running 27:53.
MIT won the meet with 41 points, followed by Williams (2nd/59 points), Middlebury (3rd/60), Colby (4th/80), and Coast Guard (5th/140).
Coast Guard also ran several runners in the open 5K race. Senior Matt Monahan and freshman Gilliam Hill were the top two runners for the Bears, placing 14th and 17th with times of 17:31 and 17:43, respectively.
Coast Guard will return to action next Saturday, October 5th when they travel to Lehigh University to compete at the Paul Short Invitational.
