Brown Named Coach of Year; Four Earn All-Academic Honors

NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard Academy head coach Ethan Brown was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year while four athletes were named Academic All-Conference Team. The Bears also won the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Award.

Brown led the Coast Guard men to a second-place finish, their highest showing in three years, while landing five runners on the NEWMAC All-Conference team.

Juniors Stephen Horvath (Mechanical Engineering) and Joe O'Connell (Mechanical Engineering) and sophomores Kevin Petow (Mechanical Engineering) and Park Suski (Mechanical Engineering) have all been named to the team from Coast Guard. Horvath and O'Connell were selected for the second consecutive season while Petow and Suski are both first-time selections.

Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2013 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season.

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 10 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
