NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Kevin Bennett traveled to Fort Benning, Georgia to compete in the U.S. National Shooting Championships, 25 June-2 July 2017.
The U.S. Championships determine the top shooters in each event as well as selection of members to the U.S. National Team. This is the first time in many years that a Coast Guard cadet has competed in the U.S. National Championships.
Little did Bennett know that he would end up winning three medals along with a Junior National Championship title.
On Monday morning, Bennett started the Standard Pistol competition by shooting a 536, and finished on Tuesday with a 534. He placed second overall and won the Junior Standard Pistol Championship. On Monday and Tuesday afternoon, he competed in the Junior Men's Sport Pistol competition where he finished 6th after firing a 543 on Monday and a 542 on Tuesday.
Wednesday morning, Bennett started the Air Pistol by firing a 541 and followed up on Thursday morning with a 550 for a 1091 total, finishing 18th overall and 8th Junior. On Thursday afternoon, he competed in Rapid Fire and fired a 525, backing it up on Friday afternoon with a 529, for 8th place overall finish and 3rd Junior, his third medal of the Championship.
For the last two days of competition, Bennett competed in the Free Pistol event firing a 482 on Saturday morning, and firing a 488 on Sunday morning for a 13th place finish.
