Two Records Fall as Coast Guard Pistol Team Defeats Navy

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bears swept Navy in all open events in shoulder-to-shoulder competition. The Bears finished with 6337 points against Navy's 6046.

The Bears handed the Midshipmen their first loss in Air Pistol on Saturday. Freshman Daniel Cheon led all competitors in Air Pistol with a 557, with the Bears winning their event over Navy, 2201 to 2165. Rounding out the winning team was junior Brian Kim with a 551, junior Helen Oh with a 549, and freshman Esther Choe with a 544. With a 36-point lead going into Standard Pistol, Cheon again led all shooters with a 543 and the Bears had their second victory over Navy, 2117 to 1936. Kim, Oh, and Choe, firing 536, 526, and 512, rounded out the winning team.

A 217-point lead going into Free Pistol, the last of the three Open events was too much for Navy, and again fell to the Bears on Sunday, 2019 to 1945. Oh led all competitors in Free Pistol with a 524. To help in the victory were sophomore Johnny Ly, Kim, and Cheon.

Cheon led all competitors in Air-557, and Standard-543 as well as the high aggregate score, 1608. Oh fired a 529 in Free to lead all competitors. She was close behind Cheon with a 1599 combined aggregate score. Freshman Benjamin Bertsche fired a personal best in Air Pistol with a 540. Ly was one point away from a personal best firing a 541 in Air and tying his personal best in Free Pistol with a 497. Sophomore Kevin Ramos fired a personal best 499 in Free Pistol.

In Women's Air Pistol, the Bears split with Navy, with each winning one Women's event. Navy defeated the Bears by two points, 1069 to 1067. Oh led against all competitors firing a 368. Choe fired a 358 and Corbett fired a 342 to round out the Air Pistol Team. Oh led the Women in Sport Pistol with a 558 for a new Academy Record team score of 1627 against Navy's 1513. Behind Oh were Choe and Corbett firing a 543 and 526, respectively. The previous Academy Record stood for 23 years, led by 2000 Olympian Janine Lavallee. The Bears defeated the Naval Academy in the Women's aggregate competition with a new Academy Record, 2694 to 2532. Oh was the high Woman shooter for the Bears with a cumulative score of 926.

The Bears Pistol Team will compete at West Point in two weeks to face USMA and USMMA, February 9-10 at the NRA National Championship qualifier.
