The 2018-19 Coast Guard pistol is as strong as ever. After last year's record-breaking season, which culminated in winning the Women's Aggregate and placing second overall in the Open category at the National Collegiate Championships, the team looks to winning it all this season.
Last year's team established new Academy team records in every event and expects to do better this year as seniors Helen Oh and Brian Kim, junior Kevin Bennett, and sophomore Esther Choe, four All-American shooters, return.
The nucleus of last year's team is returning as the Bears are taking on all comers, to include Navy, Army, and Ohio State.
The core of the team Oh, the reigning Collegiate National Champion returns along with Kim, the 2017 Collegiate National Champion. Sophomores Choe and D.J. Corbett round out the Women's Championship Team. Freshman Jo St. Ledger adds further depth to the Women's team.
Junior Johnny Ly, a precision pistol specialist, will be back to start for the Bears in Air Pistol and Free Pistol. Nationally ranked junior shooter freshman Benjamin Waalkes comes to us with a great deal of competitive experience, having competed in multiple U.S. Junior Olympic Pistol Championships where he placed fourth in 2016. Waalkes is expected to push Oh and Kim for the top spot on the Bear's team as he will be starting for the Bear's in Air, Free, and Standard.
Freshmen Samuel Kim, Nathan Nam, and Isabella Firenzi are walk-ons and already show great promise in the sport of pistol shooting.
The Bears Pistol team expects to improve both individually and as a team as it continues its winning ways.
