NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Bears swept Army in all events in shoulder-to-shoulder competition at Chase Hall as Coast Guard finished with 6418 points to Army's 6258 and set a pair of school records.
The Bears handed the Black Knights a loss in the three open Pistol events. Senior Helen Oh led all competitors in Free Pistol with a 539, with the Bears winning their first event over Army, 2018 to 2007. Also scoring for the Bears were freshman Ben Waalkes firing a 510, senior Brian Kim with a 510, and junior Kevin Bennett with a 457.
Going into Standard Pistol, Kim led all shooters with a 556 in Standard Pistol and the Bears had their second victory over Army, firing a solid 2162 to Army's 2080. Rounding out the scoring team were Oh's 539, Bennett's 536, and Waalkes' 529.
In the last of the three events, the Bears beat Army in Air Pistol with a new Academy record 2240 against Army's 2171. The new team record eclipsed the old record by eleven points. Oh led all competitors breaking her own three-year old individual Academy Record by two points, firing a 575. Helping in the new Academy Record were Waalkes' 561, Kim's 556, and Sophomore Esther Choe's 548.
In Women's Air Pistol, Oh fired a 575 to lead the Women's team score of 1622 against Army's 1520. Rounding out the Bears Women's team were Sophomore Esther Choe's 548, and Freshman Jo St.Ledger's 499. The Women's Sport Pistol defeated Army 1574 to 1475. Oh led the Bears with a 563, Choe with a 536, and Freshman Ella Firenzi in her first Sport Pistol match shooting a 475.
The Bears will compete on the road next week to face MIT, Jan. 19-20. The Bears stand 8-1 on the season.
