WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Bears defeated Army and Merchant Marine in shoulder-to-shoulder competition at Tronsue Marksmanship Center as the Bears finished with a 6376 to Army's 6371 and MMA's 5440.
The Bears defeated MMA but lost to the Black Knights in Free Pistol firing a 2024 to the Black Knights' 2026 and MMA's 1557. Senior Brian Kim led the Bears with a 523, with senior Helen Oh following close behind with a 522. Also shooting on the Bears scoring team were freshman Ben Waalkes with a 503 and junior Kevin Bennett with a 476.
Shooting personal bests were junior Johnny Ly with a 509, and sophomore Esther Choe with a 500. In the second of the three events, the Bears beat both Army and MMA in Air Pistol 2210 to 2186 and 2034, respectively. Oh led all competitors firing a 568. Also on the winning team were Kim, 555, Waalkes, 551, and Choe, 536. Going into Standard Pistol, Oh led all Bears with a 545, with Kim close behind with a 543. Rounding out the scoring team was Bennett with a 534 and Waalkes with a 520. The Bears fired a solid 2142 but was not enough to overtake the Black Knights 2159 but defeated MMA's 1849. At the end of the day, the Bears finished five points ahead of Army, 6376 to 6371, and MMA's 5440, for the overall victory.
In Women's Air Pistol, Oh fired a 568 to lead the Women's team score of 1621 against Army's 1589. Rounding out the Bears women's team were Choe's 536, and freshman Ella Firenzi's 509. Freshman Jo St.Ledger fired a personal best 518. The Women's Sport Pistol defeated Army 1621 to 1568. Oh led the Bears with a 559, Choe fired a 541, and Firenzi with her personal best 521.
The Bears, who improved to 11-1 on the season, will compete at home against our archrival Ohio State University on Feb. 23-24.
