NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard was defeated over the weekend by the perennial national power, Ohio State. The Bears lost to the Buckeyes in Air Pistol and Sport Pistol, but won the Standard Pistol match on Saturday.
Led by sophomore Ben Waalkes and freshman Chase Jin's 557s, the Bears narrowly lost in Air Pistol to Ohio State University, 2191 to 2203. Also firing for the Bears scoring team were junior Esther Choe. 545, and senior Johnny Ly, 532. The Buckeyes were led by Samuel Gen's match high 561.
Coast Guard bounced back in the second match of the weekend by beating the Buckeyes by 14 points in Standard Pistol 2117 to 2103. Waalkes again led all Bears with a 548, close behind was senior Kevin Bennett with a 546. Rounding out the scoring team was Choe's 506, and Jin's 517
The Bears had a slim two point lead going into the last match of the weekend, but were no match on Sunday to the hot shooting Buckeyes, losing by 32 points in Sport Pistol, 2219 to 2187. Waalkes led all competitors with a personal best 574. Rounding out the scoring team were, Jin's 547, Bennett's 538, and Choe's 528. At the end of the day, the Bears two point lead was not enough to overcome the Buckeyes 32 point lead in Sunday's match, and the Bears fell to the Buckeyes 6495 to 6525.
Ohio State did not bring a women's team, so Coast Guard women's team shot for All-American honors only. In Air Pistol, The women's team fired a 1580 team score with Choe leading the Bears with a 545, sophomores Ella Firenzi, fired 526, a personal best, and Jo St.Ledger fired a 509. In Sunday's Sport Pistol match, 1535. Choe fired a 528 to lead the Bears. Firenzi was close behind with a 524. St. Ledger fired a 483 to round out the scoring team.
Coast Guard will compete at Chase Hall against the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Friday and Saturday.
