Bears Drop Season Opener at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y.--While the Rifle Team lost to a very good Army team, their performance showed great promise as junior co-captain Alexis Chavarria-Aguilar led the Bears with a combined score of 1107, firing a 553 in smallbore and a 554 in air rifle. She led the Bears in smallbore, while sophmore Katiya Resney led the Bears in air rifle with a 566.

The Bears lost to the Black Knights 4,624-4,367. Coast Guard lost in both disciplines, losing smallbore 2,136 to 2,297 and air rifle 2,231 to 2,327.

The second highest smallbore shooter for the Bears was freshman Nicholas Paisker with a 538 and co-captains Junior Marek Pilarski and senior Daniela Andrade firing identical 559s in air rifle.

Senior Victoria Notaro, Nicholas Paisker, Aguilar and Andrade were members of Coast Guard's five-man team in both disciplines, while Pilarski and Katiya Resney rounded out Coast Guard's teams in smallbore and air rifle, respectively.

The Bears air rifle scores were only six points off of their high team score from last year and their smallbore scores were 124 points higher than last year's first-match score. This performance shows the Bears are making great strive in becoming competitive at the national level.
Coast Guard will face some stiff competition against the other service academies when they head to Annapolis, Md. for the President's Cup on Nov. 2nd. The three other service academies are all ranked in the top fifteen in the Collegiate pre-season poll.
