NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard Rifle closed the Mid Atlantic Rifle League season hosting the NCAA Qualifier in tandem with a match against Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Bears were led in air rifle by senior captain Nick Paisker in his penultimate match at the Academy. Paisker paced the team with a 577. Sophomore Randall Ford chipped in with season high 571. Sophomore Jacob Dupree and Freshman Dylan Lorence both posted personal bests, a 560 and 564 respectively, in the winning effort. The score of 2272 tied the season high score fired at the President's Cup at Air Force in November. Coast Guard went into the smallbore phase of the match with a 101 point advantage over MIT
Ford's team topping score of 561 in smallbore was, in part, due to an excellent performance in the difficult standing position. Ford's combined score in air and smallbore of 1124 is a highwater mark for the young rifleman. The ever consistent Paisker delivered a solid 557 in support. Rookie Marshall Grant squeezed out a 541 with Lorence rounding out the scoring with a 536. The Bears smallbore score of 2195 was about the team average and 64 points better than the Engineers. In the end, MIT fell to Coast Guard 4467 to 4302.
The Bears Rifle Team celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Coast Guard's heroic Pendleton/Fort Mercer rescue by completing an undefeated conference schedule.
Coast Guard, 16-9 overall and perfect in conference, next sees action in two weeks when it hosts the conference championship.
