NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard beat Canisus 4503-3846 in a dual meet on the final weekend of the Admiral's Cup Tournament.
Freshman Hunter Blankenship upped his personal best by six points, shooting a 570, to lead the team in Air Rifle. The freshmen led the way as fellow classmates Grayson Wheeler, 567, Seth Strayer, 559, and Anthony Contreras, with a personal best of 558, all pitched in for the victory. Randall Ford, a junior, was the only upperclassman in the scoring quartet and he rounded out the team with a 562. Junior Melissa Brizzi tied her personal best in Air Rifle with a 548.
In smallbore rifle, Ford equaled his personal best, a 570 shot in the opening match of the year, to just nudge Strayer, 569, out of the top spot. Wheeler, in spite of an injured toe, shot a 566 while Blankenship's 552 insured the team a 2257, just two points off the Academy record.
The aggregate score of 4503 bested Canisius by 657 points, making the Bears 3-0 in conference play.
The match marked the end of the first half of the season. The Bears will next see action against a trio of Division I powerhouses, Army, the University of Kentucky, and North Carolina State University, at West Point over the three-day Martin Luther King weekend.
