NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard went into the Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Championship undefeated in conference and heavily favored and did not disappoint winning the championship.
The Bears faced shooters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, John Jay College, State University of New York-Plattsburgh, and Canisius College, winning both team and all individual events for the clean sweep.
Sophomore Seth Strayer came within a point of the Academy record in air rifle, which he set earlier this year, as he led the team to a 2321 victory. Hard on his heels was freshman Bryce Strutz with a 585.
Sophomore Grayson Wheeler posted a 578 while senior Marshall Grant, in his final appearance in blue and orange, rounded out the scoring quartet with a 571.
In individual competition Strayer, Sturtz, and Wheeler took the gold, silver, and bronze medals. Sturtz set the pace in smallbore with a 572. Strayer and Wheeler battled it out for second with Strayer slipping by Wheeler, 566 to 563. Sophomore Hunter Blankenship shot a 547 to give the team a 2248. Sturtz and Stayer swapped places in individual competition while Wheeler again placed third.
The Bears now await the announcement of post season honors from the MAC and the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association.
