ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Offshore Bears traveled to Chesapeake Bay on September, 19-20 for their first intercollegiate big boat event of the fall season. The Shields Trophy is sailed in USNA's fleet of Navy 44's with a crew of eight and serves as the ICSA Big Boat Service Academy Championship.
A warm southerly greeted competitors on Saturday. Four, forty-five minute races were completed in a seabreeze that peaked in the mid-teen's. "There is a regular oscilation to the sea breeze here", commented Head Coach Jack Neades. The Bears took full advantage of the pattern in race four to move up from sixth to third during the last race of the day.
The first big cold front of the season passed overnight and an unstable northwesterly wind direction followed for Sunday's races. Helmsman Riely Brande '18, and his young crew of EJ Cunningham '18, Joshua Lambert '19, Jonathan Cardinal '19, Micah Larson '19, Peter Reeve '17, Sulli Edwards '17, and Will Colomb '18 sailed consistently in the big wind shifts off Thomas Point to finish fourth overall in the nine team field.
Next up for Offshore Sailing is the American Yacht Club Fall Series on September 26-27.
