LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- The Offshore Sailors competed this past weekend in the 10th edition of the Storm Trysail Foundation Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta hosted by the Larchmont Yacht Club. This event is the largest college sailing event in the World each year with 49 schools and over 450 sailors competing on Western Long Island Sound in 2018.
The event is broken into six different classes depending on boat size and CGA sailed aboard their J-44, GLORY in Class 1 in the Service Academy/Maritime School division. Sailing for the Bears were skipper Eric Gimple, tactician Richard O'Leary, main trimmer Amy Chamberlin, jib/spinnaker trimmers Zachary Groce, Gregory Gaskel and Megan Wadliegh, pit Derek Siliman, mast Jacob Dennis and Christian Burzycki and bow Toby Ferl.
Extremely close racing in the five boat fleet throughout the weekend. After 3 light air races on Saturday the Bears were in a tie for third with Mass Maritime and behind Navy and SUNY Maritime. Sunday brought on more light air with strong current across the course. Two more races were sailed with Coast Guard finishing a strong second in each to win the day and finish second overall.
Navy wins the event with 9 points, CGA second with 13, Mass Maritime in third with 14 winning a tie breaker over SUNY Maritime. Army finishes fifth with 25 points.
Next up for the Offshore Team is the McMillan Cup and Colgate Invite this weekend at Navy.
