Bears Win Rhode Island State Championship

NEWPORT, RI.--(11/7/11)--The Sailing Team finished off their regular season in winning fashion this past weekend by taking home the Rhode Island State Championship hosted by Salve Regina University. The regatta, which is a championship for Rhode Island schools but open to all New England teams, is historically one of the toughest conference majors of the season due to its position the schedule. This is the Bears' first time winning the regatta - they were 2nd in 2008.

The sailors were provided with beautiful racing conditions throughout the weekend, which allowed the race committee to run 12 races per division. On Saturday a strong Northerly at around 15 knots began the day, which eventually dimished to about 5 knots for the last race. On Sunday the sea breeze began to pump in around 10:30 and built to 20 knots by the end of the day.

In A-Division, sophomore Brad Milliken and seniors Kristen Holloway and Matt Stroebel finished 2nd with 66 points. They finished in the top-6 in eight of twelve races. Sophomores Will Howard and Jaimie Chicoine, freshman Lauren Cefali, and Holloway also finished 2nd in B-Division with 58 points, with eight of their twelve races inside of the top-5.

Coast Guard finished with 124 points, 14 ahead of the second place University of Rhode Island Rams. The Brown Bears finished third with 148 points.

Next weekend the team will travel to Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL to compete at the Atlantic Coast Tournament. Last year the Bears finished 3rd at the tournament and are hoping to improve upon that this year
