Bears Open Season with Four Regattas in New England

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-The Coast Guard Academy sailing team's fall 2014 season got underway this past weekend with regattas in Maine, Rhode Island, Boston, and home at Coast Guard.  Although the team posted three top-10 finishes at major conference events, it was a relatively slow start to what the team anticipates to be a highly productive season.

At the Women's Antonia Deutsch Trophy hosted by MIT, the Lady Bears sailed to a ninth place finish on the always shifty and unpredictable Charles River.  Coast Guard spent the majority of the regatta sitting in the top-5, but a few key mistakes late in the event cost the team a lot of points.  In A-Division, Lauren Cefali, Justine Morrison, Devon Rohde, and Morgan Rhodes finished in 10th with 159 points.  In the college debut, freshmen Nikole Barnes and Savannah Kuntz finished 6th in B-Division with 111 points.  The team combined for 270 points and 9th overall.  Boston College won the event with MIT in 2nd and Yale in 3rd.

The coed team traveled to Castine, Maine for the Penobscot Bay Open hosted by Maine Maritime Academy.  As one of the favorites, the Bears started the event strong, sitting in the top-3 for more than half the regatta.   Similar to the women's team, however, the Bears posted some of their highest scores late in the event and found themselves quickly falling down the leader board.  Avery Fanning and Nikolia Kruger finished 8th in A-Division with 72 points, just 3 points out of 5th.  In B-Division, Bradley Milliken, Robert Turley, Dylan Finneran, and Jaimie Chicoine finished 5th with 62 points.  The team finished 7th overall with 134 points.  The University of Vermont won the Penobscot Bay Open with Connecticut College and Tufts University rounding out the top-3.

At the Pine Trophy on their home waters in New London, the Bears sailed a tough event, finishing 9thKayla Ellis, Bradley Brown, Cyrus Unvala, and Andrew Britton finished with 72 points.  Yale took home the 71st Pine Trophy, named after Admiral Pine.

Finally, at the Mt. Hope Bay Open hosted by Roger Williams, Coast Guard finished 8th.  In A-Division, Christina Frost and Ninive Pineda Carranza were 6th with 62 points.  Luis Marban Terrazas and Josh Moan were 7th in B-Division with 73 points.
