Newport, RI-(11/10/2013)-The Bears won the second annual Sister Esther regatta which also served as the Rhode Island State Championships hosted by Slave Regina University and sailed out the Fort Adams State Park in Newport, RI over the weekend. Twenty New England teams competed where several teams started sailors that were preparing for the Atlantic Coast Championships the following weekend, the regatta was deep and competitive. Saturday brought cool temperatures with a west-northwest that went west in the afternoon with winds ranging from 10-20 knots.
The Bears claimed the lead after the second set of the regatta and after six races in each division were completed on Saturday led by 16 points over Rhode Island and 32 points over third place Tufts. Sunday saw puffy conditions 10-15 knots from the southwest with slightly longer courses.
With six more races sailed in each division, Rhode Island clawed into the lead and the Bears were only up by four points going into the last set. In A-Division Kayla Ellis and Andrew Britton finished 2nd with 73 points. B-Division was sailed by Bradley Brown and crew Joshua Moan who also finished 2nd with 46 points, only 3 points behind Tufts.
A great win for this squad who showed the ability to close out and extend their lead in the final set.
