LONG BEACH, Calif.—(1/5/14)—The Sailing Team finished 2nd at the 29th annual Rose Bowl hosted by the University of Southern California. Twenty-six college teams flocked to Long Beach for this premier Interconference regatta, which also featured a fleet of over sixty high schools.
Typical for this time of year in Southern California, light breeze was the theme of the weekend. The race committee struggled to find sailable conditions during the two day event but were able to get in four races per divisions in wind ranging from 2-7 knots.
The Bears got off to a slow start on day one in incredibly fickle conditions. The team ended the day sitting in 9th place with a lot of teams within striking distance. Sunday's conditions were slightly more stable, which allowed the Bears to climb back up the leader board.
In a very tight A-Division, Avery Fanning and Justine Morrison finished 6th with 25 points. Nikole Barnes and Justine Morrison – who was pulling double duty due to a teammate missing a flight – were 3rd in B-Division with 17 points.
The team combined for 42 points and 2nd overall. Georgetown University won the Rose Bowl with 27 points. Roger Williams rounded out the top-3 with 48 points.
