Women's Sailing Advances to National Championship Finals

NORFOLK, Va. -- The women's sailing team finished third at the Sperry Women's National Championship Semifinals to advance to the Sperry Women's National Championship Finals. The finals, hosted by Old Dominion University, will begin at 10am on Thursday, May 24 and conclude on Friday, May 25.

The semifinals began in a light and shifty southerly that proved to be challenging for the Bears who struggled to find consistency in the opening races of the regatta. After four races in each division, Coast Guard was in twelfth place overall with all teams very close on points. The Bears soon hit their stride, posting several top-5 finishes and slowly crept up the leaderboard. After Saturday's racing, Coast Guard sat in sixth overall.

After a lot of hard work to consistently improve their strategy on day one, the Bears won the day on Wednesday - the final day of racing - and moved up to third overall. With only one race outside of the top-10 all day, Coast Guard solidified their position in the finals and will look to ride this momentum into the year's culminating event.

Dana Rohde and Anna Morin won A-Division with 59 points, winning a tie breaker with College of Charleston's Alie Toppa and Annabel Carrington who also had 59 points. Rohde and Morin won six of the last seven races to close the series. Madelynn Widmeier and Christina Nothacker finished fourth in B-Division with 87 points. They won the last race of the regatta to help the Bears move into third place overall.

Tomorrow the scoreboard is wiped clean for the Finals and it's anyone's regatta to win. The competition will only be stronger in the Finals group. Racing is set to begin at 10 a.m. The top 18 teams will be competing for the Gerald C. Miller Trophy over the next two days.
