Coed 2nd, Women 5th at Vietor Trophy

NEW LONDON, Conn - Coast Guard entered two teams in the Vietor Trophy, contested on home waters. The coed team finished second and the women's team finished fifth in a field of eighteen teams from across New England.

Saturday brought extreme conditions with a winter storm that was moving through the region. The wind average ranged from 15-20 knots with gusts into the mid-30s. Despite the trying conditions, five A-Division races and four B-Division races were completed. On Sunday, the morning started with a nice westerly that slowly faded. Soon, however, a sea breeze developed, providing for near perfect racing for the final four races in each division. A total of twelve races per division were completed.

Coast Guard's two A-Division boats finished within the top three. Madelynn Widmeier and Anna Maria Vaccaro finished second with 69 points. Andrew Widmeier and Casey Gale finished third with 79 points.

In B-Division, Richard Gordon and Mary Tran finished third with 56 points while Madeline Kaller and Lily Maranto were thirteenth with 134 points.

The coed team finished with a total of 135 points and second overall. The women tallied 203 points for fifth overall.

Dartmouth College won the 2019 Vietor Trophy with 101 points.
