Head Coach Spotlight
Brian Swingly is in his seventh year as head coach of the Coast Guard Academy Intercollegiate Sailing Team after serving three as the assistant coach. While at the Academy, Swingly has helped lead the Bears to four Women’s National Championship, two Coed National Championships, two Sloop National Championship, one Men’s Singlehanded Championship, and five Women’s Singlehanded Championship appearances. Under his watch, Coast Guard has developed three ICSA All-Americans, three members of the ICSA All-American Honorable Mention Team, seven members of the All-NEISA Women’s Team, one member of the All-NEISA Coed Team, and five members of the ICSA All-Academic Team.
In the past several season, both the coed and women’s team have climbed the national rankings, with the women’s team being ranked as high as #1 for several weeks and the coed team being as high as third in the country. Swingly was named New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Coach of the Year in both 2012 and 2015, an award voted on by his peers. "To receive this prestigious honor once is special but to win twice in four years is amazing," explained Director of Sailing Doug Clark. "That fact that his peers in New England, the toughest conference in the country with many excellent coaches voted for him to receive this award is a testament to the respect and commitment he has not only within our conference but in the entire intercollegiate coaching community".
In the collegiate offseason, Swingly works with many of the top and upcoming youth athletes on both the Laser and Club 420 circuits. He has helped produce many top-10 finishes at international events, including wins a the 2010 Laser North American Championship (Laser Radial), 2012 Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta (Laser), and 2013 US Sailing Youth Championship (Laser). Swingly also served as the Head Coach of the 420 Race Team at Hyannis Yacht Club from 2005-2006. In 2006, Swingly helped the HYC team win the Team Championship for the Southern Massachusetts Sailing Association.
Swingly graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2005 with a degree in Psychology. As a member of the sailing team, he was named captain for his sophomore through senior years and received the UNH Sailing Team’s MVP award in 2004 and 2005.
Brian remains very active in the racing community and is a member of the Thistle Class Association. He is a US Sailing certified level 2 coach and a level 1 instructor trainer. Swingly currently lives in Pawcatuck, Conn. with his fiancée Caroline.
