NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard Academy sophomore catcher Jessie Richardson was named to the 2013 NFCA All-New England Region Team. She was named to the second team, marking the second year in a row that she has received that honored.
Richardson had a terrific sophomore campaign, especially in light of recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. She bounced back after rehabbing to lead the club with a .415 batting average as she recorded her second 50-hit season to go over 100 for her career. Additionally, she managed to drive in a team-high 24 runs while her 10 doubles were also tops on the team.
She seemed to transition seamlessly after being moved from the third spot in the order to the leadoff spot toward the end of the year. Her 21 runs scored ranked second on the team and her seven strikeouts in 141 plate appearances is exactly what is needed out of a leadoff batter.
Head coach Donna Koczajowski was very proud of Richardson being named to the All-Region team, saying, "Jessie had a tremendous season, especially considering she was recovering from an off-season surgery," and continued to say, "She was our most consistent offensive and defensive player, often setting the tone on both sides of the plate."
The Bears completed the season with an overall mark of 22-17 (7-9 NEWMAC) and finished in third place at the annual NEWMAC Tournament in a year in which they weren't expected to compete for a conference post-season title. The Bears look to return all but two starters for next season where even greater things will be expected.
