NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard sophomore Sarah Sorensen has been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference.
Pitching for the first time in nearly two years, Sorensen – a converted outfielder – picked up a pair of victories as Coast Guard (2-0) opened up the season with a sweep of national powerhouse TCNJ and Penn St.-Behrend. Sorensen worked 9.1– all out of the bullpen – of the Bears' 13.0 innings pitched on the week, yielding just 10 hits without allowing an earned run. The honor is the first of Sorensen's career and she is now 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA on the season.
In the first game of a Sunday double-header, Sorensen recorded 12 of 17 outs via ground balls to lead Coast Guard to an 8-4 victory of 2013 Regional Qualifier TCNJ. In the nightcap she again came out of the 'pen to help Coast Guard overcome five errors to defeat Penn St.-Behrend 15-7 (in six innings) with 3.2 innings of relief work, allowing just one unearned run.
Coast Guard returns to action tomorrow, March 11th when they take on Anna Maria and Richard Stockton at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.
