NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard junior Jessie Richardson has been honored as New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week and the CGASPORTS.COM Athlete of the Week. Richardson became the second Coast Guard softball player in as many weeks to be honored by the NEWMAC after sophomore pitcher Sarah Sorensen was recognized as the league's Pitcher of the Week last week.
The junior catcher had a week for the ages, racking up an eye-popping .720 batting average (18-for-25), .700 on-base percentage, and .920 slugging percentage (23 total bases). Richardson had a stretch in which she went 16-for-17 with seven of her 10 RBI for the week. She also totaled three doubles, a triple, three walks, and four stolen bases on the week while scoring 10 runs. In addition, she threw out two would-be base stealers on the week.
She currently leads the NEWMAC in 10 offensive categories including; hits (21), doubles (5), triples (2), RBI (17), total bases (30), sac flies (2), stolen bases (4 – in four attempts), batting average (.677), on-base percentage (.658), and slugging percentage (.968) while ranking third with twelve runs scored.
Coast Guard currently sits at 6-4 on the season. The Bears are scheduled to play next on Wednesday, March 19th when they host 2013 regional qualifier Roger Williams in a 3:00 pm double-header before opening up NEWMAC play on Sunday, March 23rd with a 1:00 pm double-header against Springfield.
