Ferris Pitches Bears to Sweep of Clark

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Julia Ferris threw a pair of complete game victories for the first time in her career while the Bears hit three homers in the second game to sweep Clark 4-2 and 8-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

Coast Guard evens its overall record at 15-15 overall while improving to 3-11 in the NEWMAC. Clark drops to 6-18 overall and 1-13 in conference play.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday when they host Bay Path in a single game at 3:30, the final non-conference game of the season.

GAME ONE – COAST GUARD 4, CLARK 2

Freshman Kayla Sowers was 3 for 4 while classmate Claire Hurley added a pair of hits and Ferris (7-10) scattered five hits, allowed a pair of earned runs, walked one and struck out three to pick up the complete game victory.

Clark took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Olivia Barksdale. Senior Lauren Mackey blasted a solo homer to left in the third as the Cougars took a 2-0 lead.

Coast Guard got on the board in the third as Sowers, Hurley and freshman Courtney McKenna all singled before freshman Audrey Bartz drew a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Bears pulled even in the fifth thanks to a pair of errors tying the game 2-2.

Coast Guard would also take the lead on an error in the sixth as junior Casey Cruzpino led off with a single, moved to  second on a bunt by sophomore Malia Hindle and came around on a throwing error. The Bears would add an insurance run later in the inning on an RBI single by Hurley.

Junior Sami West (2-6) went the distance for Clark and took the loss allowing nine hits, four runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out four.

GAME TWO – COAST GUARD 8, CLARK 2

The Bears showed some power at the plate as sophomore Kelli Franza and freshman Audrey Bartz each hit their first career homer while junior Emma Hvozdovich also homered in the nightcap.

Ferris (8-10) fanned a career-high eight while scattering seven hits, allowing a pair of earned runs and walking three for the win.

The Bears struck first as Sowers stole home in the first for a 1-0 lead.

Clark pulled even in the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Michelle Robidas.

Bartz delivered an RBI single in the third scoring Sowers, who led off with a double, to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars tied the game on a homer by Mackey, her second of the day and the season, in the fifth.

The Bears took control in the home half of the fifth as sophomore Sharayah Simco was hit by a pitch to lead off, moved to second on a bunt by Sowers and came around as Hurley singled to right and the ball was misplayed giving Coast Guard a 3-2 lead.

Bartz would blast a two-run shot to right-center later in the inning for a 5-2 lead.

Coast Guard added three more in the sixth as Franza led off with a homer to right and Hvozdovich hit a two-run shot to left to close the scoring.

Freshman Sarah Woods (2-3) took the loss for Clark as she pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing nine hits, seven runs (six earned) with one walk and three strikeouts.

Sowers, Franza and Bartz each had two hits in the game two win for the Bears.

Mackey and sophomore Taylor Erickson had two hits each for Clark in the nightcap.
