CLERMONT, Fla. – Coast Guard wrapped up their spring break trip with two wins as they topped Lasell 9-0 and MCLA 7-1 Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Bears finish up their southern swing 7-1. The Lasers fall to 2-4 while the Trail Blazers drop to 0-3.
Senior Emma Hvozdovich went a combined 4-4 with a double, triple, home run, four RBI's and a run scored. Hvozdovich finishes the week leading the conference with a .833 slugging percentage and tied for the league lead with 13 RBI's. Sophomore Carley Hattman (.526) went 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. She is seventh in the NEWMAC in batting average and third in OBP (.609). Sophomore Claire Hurley finished with three RBI's and two runs scored while junior Malia Hindle had two.
In game one, Coast Guard jumped all over Lasell from the jump scoring two runs in the top of the first followed by four runs in the second. Hvozdovich highlighted this stretch with the team's first home run of the season to left field. The Bears notched three more runs to end the game in five.
Sophomore Julia Ferris (4-1) tallied her first complete game and shutout of the season pitching five innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. Ferris finishes the week with a 2.21 ERA and 21 strikeouts. She is third in the league in strike outs and sixth in ERA.
In game two, Coast Guard once again took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Courtney McKenna smacked and RBI double down the right field line while Hurley came up big with the bases load knocking a bases clearing triple to right field.
MCLA managed to get one run back in the top of the third before the Bears shut the door with one run in the fourth and two runs in the sixth.
Freshman Sydney Arendt (3-0) recorded her first career game complete game pitching seven innings allowing one run on seven hits and striking out three. She is fourth in the league with a 1.59 ERA to start the year and has also tallied one save on the year.
Coast Guard returns to New England and will attempt to play two against Roger Williams on Tuesday, March 20th. First pitch will be 3:00 PM.
