NEW LONDON, Conn. – MIT handed Coast Guard its first two New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) losses of the season beating the Bears 8-0 in the opener and 14-2 in five innings in the second game.
MIT improves to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 11-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday at Trinity in a doubleheader at 3:00.
GAME ONE – MIT 8, COAST GUARD 0
MIT got the only run it would need in the first added two more in the fifth, one in the sixth and four insurance runs in the seventh for the win.
Courtney McKenna and Audrey Bartz each two hits to lead the Bears.
Sydney Arendt (5-4) worked the first five innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs to take the loss.
GAME TWO -- MIT 14, COAST GUARD 2 (5 INNINGS)
The Engineers scored six runs in the first en route to the 14-2 five inning win.
Coast Guard trailing 11-0 in the third would get on the board on an RBI single by Bartz.
The Bears would add their final run in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Carly Hattman.
Phoebe Li had a three-run homer and drove in five runs to lead the MIT offense.
Arendt (5-5) pitched the first two innings and took the loss for Coast Guard.
