NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Coast Guard softball swept Albertus Magnus in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. The the first game Coast Guard won, 9-7, and won the second game, 8-1. The Bears are now 16-12, Albertus is 11-13.
The Bears are back in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at home on Friday against WPI at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
GAME ONE; COAST GUARD 9, ALBERTUS 7
Senior Sharayah Simco (3-for-4) hit two home runs and had five RBI's to lead Coast Guard in their first victory over Albertus, 9-7. Junior Courtney McKenna (1-for-4) and freshman Maggie Perez (2-for-3) both had one RBI each in the victory.
The Bears took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior Claire Hurley scored on a passed ball and Simco hit an RBI single.
In the top of the third Jess Stettinger hit a two-run homer to tie the game 2-2 for Albertus.
Simco hit a homer to right field to give the Bears a 3-2 lead at the bottom of the third.
Albertus tied it back up 3-3 in the top of the fourth ona SAC fly by Marissa Guglielmi that sent Kristin Cunning in to score.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hurley grounded out in a double play that sent Perez home and McKenna had an RBI single as the Bears took a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Falcons scored three unearned runs to take a 6-5 lead over the Bears.
The Bears tied it, 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth as Perez grounded out to send junior Audrey Bartz home.
Stettinger hit her second home run of the day at the top of the sixth to give the Falcons a 7-6 edge.
Simco answered with her second home run of the day, a three-run home run for the Bears to take the lead back, 9-7.
Sophomore Sydney Arendt pitched all seven innings in the win with four strikeouts and improves to 7-7 on the season.
GAME TWO; COAST GUARD 8, ALBERTUS 1 (FIVE INNINGS)
Laura Anderson hit a home run in the top of the first to give Albertus their only score of the game.
Bartz hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to tie it 1-1.
In the bottom of the second, Hurley reached on a fielding error that sent Noelle Greenwood home for a 2-1 lead. McKenna followed with a two-run single to extend the Bears lead 4-1.
Senior Malia Hindle had a SAC fly sending Simco home in the bottom of the third to give the Bears a 5-1 lead.
The Bears scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kraiss had an RBI single and Bartz hit a two-run single to give the Bears the 8-1 victory.
Junior Julia Ferris went the distance for the Bears with four strikeouts improving to 9-5 on the season.
