Bears Fall to Conn. College to End Semester
NEW LONDON, Conn.—Juniors Tara Gabelman and Caitlin Cimino each had 17 points and nine rebounds leading Connecticut College to a 54-43 non-conference win over host Coast Guard in a matchup of the two New London schools.
The Camels, who won their third straight to improve to 5-4 on the season, used a 15-1 run in the first half turning a 4-3 deficit into a 18-5 lead with 10:15 left.
Conn. College led 28-16 late in the first half before freshman Meghan Fornaro hit a 3-pointer and then had a steal and layup with 24 seconds left to cut the Bears deficit to 28-21 at halftime.
Coast Guard started the second half on a 7-2 spurt to close to within 30-28 with 13:54 left.
The Camels took control of the game using an 11-2 spurt turning a 32-30 edge into a 43-32 lead with 8:02 remaining in the game.
Gabelman had 11 of her 17 points in the second half as the Camels shot 47.4 percent from the floor in the first half (9-19), but just 29.6 percent in the second half (8-27). Conn. College was 20 of 29 from the foul line and missed its only 3-point attempt in the game.
Freshman Meghan Fornaro led the Bears with 16 points while junior Larla Brown tied her season-high with 12 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Dani Knox also had seven rebounds for the Bears.
Coast Guard finishes the first semester 4-5 overall. The Bears shot a season-low 26.6 percent from the field (17-64) while making just three of 16 from behind the arc.
The Camels outrebounded the Bears 45-39.
Coast Guard will begin second semester play at WPI on January 5th with tip set for 1 p.m.
