NEW LONDON, Conn.-Coast Guard sophomore Torie Sutherland has been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second consecutive week as announced by the conference on Monday.
Sutherland was outstanding in the Bears' lone game last week. She recorded her first double-double of the season after tallying 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 77-56 victory over MIT to keep Coast Guard unbeaten and tied for first place in the NEWMAC.
Sutherland, third in the NEWMAC in both field goal percentage (59.0 percent) and in three-point percentage (57.1 percent), was efficient in the win, making eight of her 11 attempts from the field – including her lone three-point try – and sinking both of her free throw attempts. She did a little bit of everything while handing out three assists and blocking a shot on the defensive end.
The Bears (4-0, 3-0 NEWMAC) are off to their best start in conference play since the 2007/08 season when they won their first six conference games. Coast Guard returns to action on Wednesday, December 4th when they travel to Clark for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
