DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Junior Meghan Fornaro scored a career high 27 points leading the Bears to a 75-60 win over Nazareth College in their first game of the Land of Magic Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle University.
Junior Torie Sutherland followed up Fornaro's 27 points by adding thirteen points and nine rebounds helping push Coast Guard (3-4) to a double digit victory.
The Golden Flyers (3-4) were led by juniors Lindsey Kelly and Julia Brew. Kelly scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Brew finished with 17 points of her own.
The Bears were facing an early deficit when a Brew layup gave Nazareth and early 9-4 lead 16:31 into the game.
Coast Guard would even the score for the first time since the start of the game when senior Alexi Howland sunk a three pointer to tie the score at twelve at the 13:28 mark.
The Golden Flyers would take their final lead of the game at 23-20 when Kelly scored a layup with 7:40 left in the first half.
The Bears seized control of the game, finishing the first half on a 25-6 run. Coast Guard's burst was fueled by 10 points from Fornaro including two three pointers and six points from freshman Gill Gerton.
The start of the second half saw more of the same as the Bears scored 15 of the first 20 points of the half taking their largest lead of the game, 58-34 just 7:21 into the second half.
Nazareth attempted to mount a comeback as they went on a 17-3 run narrowing Coast Guard's advantage to 12 points with 7:44 left in the game on a layup by junior Sam Sorge. Kelly led the charge for the Golden Flyers as she scored seven points during the stretch.
The Bears would slam the door on any Nazareth comeback as Fornaro scored the next five points pushing their lead to 17. Both teams traded baskets from then on as Coast Guard pulled off the opening day victory at the Land of Magic Classic.
The Bears shot 43.1% (25-58) from the floor and 7-15 (46.7%) from beyond the arch. Coast Guard made the Golden Flyers pay for their mistakes as they scored twenty points off of Nazareth turnovers.
The Golden Flyers shot 39.6% (21-53) for the game and 6-17 (35.3%) from three. Nazareth did out rebound the Bears 36-32 but were undone by 23 turnovers.
Coast Guard returns to action tomorrow, December 29th when they face off against Colby in the second day of the Land of Magic Classic. The game will tip at 4:00 pm.
