Bears Pull Away in Second Half for NEWMAC Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard led from start to finish on their way to beating Emerson 66-54 in NEWMAC play.

Junior Meghan Fornaro and senior Leigha Steinbeck each had 15 points while Fornaro added six rebounds for the Bears (6-5, 2-2). Steinbeck's 15 point was a career high. Junior Torie Sutherland scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards. Senior Dani Knox had a team high 10 rebounds.

Seniors Kristin Brice and Catherine Cloutier each had a double-double for the Lions (7-5, 2-2). Brice had 13 points and 12 rebounds while Cloutier score 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds of her own.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 16-5 under four minutes into the game. Steinbeck had eight points in the early going draining her first three shots of the game, two of them being from beyond the arc.

Emerson then went on an 8-2 run to cut the Bears lead to five with 12:59 left in the half. Freshman Maya Savino capped off the stretch with a three pointer making the score 18-13.

Coast Guard would push the lead to 11 again when Torie Sutherland finished off an old fashioned three point play capping off a 13-6 run for the Bears and making the score 31-19 with 5:23 on the clock.

The Lions would push back finishing off the half scoring seven of the final nine points bringing the score to 33-26 going into the second half.

Emerson continued to press cutting the lead to three midway through the second half as freshman Sierra Ducey drained two free throws to make the score 43-40 with 11:08 left in the game.

Coast Guard would take control of the game once again, going on a 13-3 run pushing their lead to 13 points with a score of 56-43. The Lions would not threaten the rest of the way as the Bears wrapped up a 66-54 victory.

Coast Guard shot 19-67 (28.4%) from the floor and 24.0% (6-25) from beyond the arc. The Bears gained their biggest advantage outscoring Emerson 22-0 on turnovers.

The Lions shot 37.7% (20-53) and were 4-11 (36.4%) from three. Emerson managed to control the paint slightly outscoring Coast Guard 24-18.

The Bears return to action on Tuesday, January 13th when they travel to Northampton Massachusetts for a NEWMAC battle with Smith. The game will tip at 7:00 pm.
