Springfield Holds off Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn.--  Junior Emily Gins had a game-high 17 points as Springfield held off Coast Guard 55-50 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Sophomore Ava Adamopoulos finished with 15 points and eight rebounds while senior Jaimie Bickelhaupt had a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds as the Pride, who have won eight of their last nine, improved to 10-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

Coast Guard had its three-game win streak snapped dropping to 7-6 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.

The Bears led 14-13 on a basket by senior Dani Knox with 10:25 to go in first half, but Coast Guard would make just one more field goal in the half as Springfield used a 12-2 run to end the half taking a 32-20 lead at the break.

The Pride led by as many as 14 in the second half, 34-20 and Springfield led by eight (43-35) with 7:59 left before the Bears used an 8-2 run capped on a 3-pointer by senior Alexi Howland 5:34 left to cut the lead to 45-43.

Gins made back-to-back layups with senior Andrea Moschetta assisting on both hoops as the Pride turned a 47-44 lead into a 51-44 advantage with 2:43 left in the game.

Sophomore Tori Sutherland pulled the Bears to within four at 52-48 with 21 seconds left before Bickelhaupt's layup with ten seconds left iced the game.

Knox recorded her first double-double of the season and the sixth of her career as she finished with 11 points and team-high ten rebounds. Sutherland and Howland also each had 11 points for the Bears.

Springfield shot 41.2 percent from the floor (21-51) while making 2 of 14 from 3-point range. Coast Guard shot as season-low 27.9 percent from the field (17-61) and made six of 27 from behind the arc.

Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when they travel to MIT for a 1 p.m. tip.
