NORTON, Mass. – Junior Torie Sutherland led four Bears in double figures with a game-high 21 points as Coast Guard upset first place Wheaton 72-65 ending the Lyons eight-game winning streak in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Junior Meghan Fornaro added 20 points while freshman Gill Gerton and senior Alexi Howland each added ten points in the win for Coast Guard. Gerton and Fornaro led the Bears with eight rebounds while Fornaro had a team-high six assists.
Coast Guard won its fourth straight to improve to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in the conference while Wheaton drops to 13-6 overall and is knocked out of a first place tie in the NEWMAC dipping to 9-2 in conference play.
Rebecca Arnone led the Lyons with 18 points, going 4 of 5 from behind the arc while Abbie Brickley added 15 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and Kiley Shoemaker also had a double-double as she finished with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Sutherland scored the first basket of the second half giving Coast Guard its largest lead of the game, 44-27, before the Lyons used a 10-2 run to quickly cut the deficit to 46-37 with 15:57 remaining.
Shoemaker scored five straight points as Wheaton pulled to within 61-56 with 5:49 left and both teams went scoreless for over two minutes before Alexi Howland knocked down a huge 3-pointer with 3:38 left and Sutherland added a bucket with 3:07 left to push the lead back to ten.
Wheaton jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the Bears used a 13-2 run to take a 14-10 lead with 11:42 left in the half.
Wheaton regained the lead 15-14 on a 3-pointer by Emily Cuthberson with 10:37 left before the Bears scored eight straight taking a 22-15 lead with 8:34 left in the half.
The Lyons cut the deficit to 25-23 with 6:18 left in the half, but Coast Guard would outscore the Lyons 17-4 the remainder of the half to take a 42-27 lead into halftime.
Senior Dani Knox grabbed the 500th rebound of her career and now has 502 career rebounds. She becomes the 17th player in Coast Guard history to accomplish that feat.
Coast Guard did damage on the offensive glass in the first half finishing with 15 offensive rebounds in the half, five by Fornaro, who led the Bears with 12 points in the first half while Sutherland had 11 first half points.
The Bears shot 36.4 percent from the floor (28 for 77) while making 8 of 31 from 3-point range (25.8 percent) while Wheaton was 24 for 58 from the field (41.4 percent) hitting 10 for 21 from behind the arc (47.6 percent).
Coast Guard is back in action on Monday night when the Bears host Albertus Magnus in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
