BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Meghan Fornaro had 18 points and nine rebounds and four assists while classmate Torie Sutherland registered her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds leading Coast Guard to its school record eighth straight win 71-51 over Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Coast Guard had a huge second half outscoring the Lions 41-22 while shooting 51.7 percent in the final half after leading by just one at halftime.
The game was tied 35-35 with 16:29 left when the Bears used a 9-1 run and later leading 48-40 with 12:38 left, Coast Guard put the game away with a 12-2 run taking a 60-42 lead with 6:58 left.
The Bears improve to 15-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference while the Lions drop to 11-12 overall and 5-9 in the NEWMAC.
Fornaro, who had 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, cracked Coast Guard's top ten scoring list moving into tenth place with 877 career points.
Senior Alexi Howland added ten points in the win for the Bears, who shot 42.9 percent from the floor (27 of 63) while making 5 of 17 from behind the arc.
Emerson was 19 of 60 from the field (31.7 percent) and hit 5 of 20 from 3-point range.
The Bears used a 9-1 run in the first half to take their largest lead 25-14 with 9:12 left, but the Lions quickly responded with seven straight to cut the deficit to 25-21 with 6:23 left. The Bears led 30-29 at halftime.
Sutherland had 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half to lead the Bears.
Kristin Brice led Emerson with ten points and nine rebounds.
Coast Guard is back in action on Monday night when they host Albertus Magnus in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
