Bears Earn First NEWMAC Win of Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Micaela Martinelli had 13 points while senior Gillian Gerton had 12 points and nine rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 68-58 win over Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

Coast Guard led 51-50 with 7:24 left before Martinelli and sophomore Zoe Riis-Fallica hit 3-pointers to push the lead to 57-50 with 6:08 left.

Riis-Fallica finished a career-high nine rebounds and season-high seven assists in the win for the Bears (2-3, 1-1).

Sophomore Katie Foultz had a game-high 20 points while classmate Quinn Madden added 13 points for Emerson. Freshman Sam Boyle had a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lions, who drop to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.

Coast Guard led by as many as seven in the first half, 28-21 with 4:09 left in the second quarter, and the Bears led 34-31 at halftime.

The Bears led 43-42 after three and outscored the Lions 25-16 in the fourth quarter.

Coast Guard shot a season-high 44.3 percent from the lfoor (27-61) and made 7 of 20 from behind the arc while Emerson shot 28.8 percent (21-74) making 8 of 29 from 3-point range.

The Bears held a 49-38 edge on the glass in the win.

Coast Guard is back in action on Monday night when the Bears play a non-conference game at Fisher at 7:00.
