Bears Earn Second NEWMAC Win of the Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard earned their second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season topping Mount Holyoke 88-26 Wednesday night.

Tonight's win was the second largest margin of victory in program history just falling short of Coast Guard's 77-9 win over York of New York in 1995-96.

The Bears improved to 5-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play. The Lyons fall to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Micaela Martinelli led all scorers with 18 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Zoe Riis-Fallica scored 13 points and grabbed four steals while freshman Brenna Farrington made three three pointers on her way to 11 points, three assists and seven rebounds.

Junior Leah Hodges had a team high 12 points for the Lyons.

Coast Guard dominated from the jump running out to a 26-2 lead. Senior Gillian Gerton had six points and six rebounds while Martinelli added six points on 3-5 shooting in the opening quarter. The Bears took advantage of nine steals in the first period with 13 points off turnovers.

Coast Guard continued to dominate in the second quarter scoring 27 points to take a 53-10 lead going into the half. Farrington was 2-3 from three scoring six points in the period.

It was more of the same in the second half as the Bears pushed their lead to 88-26 closing out their second NEWMAC win of the season.

Coast Guard made 37-76 (48.7 %) from the floor and shot 36.0% (9-25) from beyond the arc. The Bears controlled rebounds (48-22), points off turnovers (36-11), points in the paint (50-12) and steals (21-6).

The Lyons made 23.7% (9-38) overall and 0-1 from three.

Coast Guard is back in action January 9th, when they continue with NEWMAC play and host the Wheaton Lyons. Opening tip is 7:00.
