BOSTON, Mass. – UMass-Boston outscored Coast Guard 28-14 in the fourth quarter to beat the Bears 70-59 in the season opener for both teams.
Senior Micaela Martinelli led Coast Guard with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists while freshman Emma Puddington had 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench before fouling out in her collegiate debut. Senior Johanna Moolenaar added 10 points for Coast Guard.
The Beacons jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and led 15-7 after the first quarter.
UMass-Boston pushed the lead to 20-7 and led 23-11 before the Bears used a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to 25-23 on a 3-pointer by Puddington with 26 seconds left in the first half. Coast Guard trailed 27-25 at the half.
The game was tied 35-35 when the Bears scored seven straight taking their largest lead of the game 32-25 on a basket by freshman Katie White with 2:36 left in the third quarter. The Bears led 45-42 after three quarters.
Coast Guard led 48-46 with 8:13 left when UMass-Boston ran off eight straight to take a 54-48 lead with 5:03 remaining. The Beacons did not look back later using a 7-1 run to put the game away leading 61-51 with 1:56 left.
The Bears shot 30.4 percent from the field (21-69) and made 3 of 21 from behind the arc while UMass-Boston shot 36.5 percent from the floor (23-63) and connected on 4 of 11 from 3-point range.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears host Nichols in the home opener at 7:00.
