NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard women's basketball dropped a 77-62 setback on the road in non-conference action at Connecticut College on Sunday afternoon. The Bears fall to 1-4 on the season, while Connecticut College improves to 4-0.
Senior Micaela Martinelli led the Bears with a game-high 21 points, with seven rebounds and one steal. Freshman Emma Puddington scored nine points with six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Classmate Julia Guerrero had six points, with five rebounds and four assists coming off the bench for Coast Guard.
The Camels started the game with a 7-0 run before Martinelli made a layup to get the Bears on the board, 7-2. Conn. held a 18-6 advantage after the first quarter. Martinelli made two free throws to start the second quarter for the Bears, to cut the deficit 18-8. Coast Guard scored 16 points in the second quarter to trail 35-22 heading into the halftime break.
Martinelli and Guerrero combined for 11 of Coast Guard's 17 points in the third quarter, but the Bears still trailed 57-39 heading into the fourth quarter. Martinelli shot 2-4 from behind the three point arc and 4-7 from the field during the fourth quarter to lead Coast Guard with 10 points in the quarter. Coast Guard outshot the Camels 23-20 during the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as Connecticut College held Coast Guard to the 77-62 final.
Coast Guard was 25-69 (36.2%) from the field, 6-23 (26.1%) from three point range, and 6-10 (60.0%) in free throws.
Coast Guard returns home on Wednesday, November 28 at 7:00 PM to host Mount Holyoke. Connecticut College will travel to Mitchell College on Tuesday, November 27 at 6:00 PM.
